The California Rally Series – Rally School and Ridgecrest RallyX are set for February 7 and 8, 2009.
The Rally and RallyX School adds an all new RallyMoto™ School

Don’t miss this all day event that covers all the elements of Rally, RallyMoto™, and RallyX (rally cross) competition. This year, we’ve added a new course track for our motorcycle competitors running the new RallyMoto™ series. In all three schools, a heavy emphasis will be placed on in the seat time for drivers/riders and co-drivers on practice courses designed to give them the “feel” of real competition. Experienced Drivers will ride along with you to show you how to use the practice area. Two or more students may share one car. A helmet with a Snell 90 or newer sticker is required for the driver’s practice. A few loaner helmets are available. No helmets are required for the co-driver practice sessions.

HDT to Welcome RallyMoto™

RallyMoto™

RallyMoto™ at Laughlin'07

Ready for an adventure? We are excited to welcome RallyMoto competitors to our rally. Growing up around motorcycles, I have an intense appreciation for what you guys and gals can do with your machines. If you have not experienced a rally before – one bike at a time is sent down a closed stage road and it’s just you against the clock. Seen WRC? It’s like that but with bikes. Heard of Dakar? It’s like that but much shorter and you stick to the defined route. We have a great 6 mile closed course that has a bit of everything: fast and smooth, sandy and technical, twisty with some small elevation changes.

Two exciting things are happening in the sport right now. 1. The CRS has announced a RallyMoto championship for 2009! Several events will be on the calendar and that means more bikes at rallies! 2. You guys are starting to get serious! No more excuses calculating time controls – now is the time to get on your game. This is why we are working with the California Rally Series Rally School to offer a discount for drivers, co-drivers, and riders who attend this year’s school. Take the 2009 CRS Rally School in Ridgecrest on February 7th and two weeks later test your skills on a small, low pressure rally, right outside of town. Stay tuned for more info on the school, the discount, and the High Desert Trails Rally!

RALLY TO RUN FEBRUARY 21st IN CALIFORNIA!

Rally competitors, husband and wife team of Kristopher & Christine Marciniak, would like to introduce a new regional rally to the calendar for 2009. The High Desert Trails Rally will be a low key, affordable event. The rally will be held in Ridgecrest, California on February 21st 2009.

Planning on attending the CRS Rally School? This event will be a great place to practice your driving, note calling, and newly acquired rally skills. Plus, we’ll be giving those drivers, co-drivers, and riders a discount for completing this year’s school! We’ll have a single pass caravan reconnaissance you can do in your rally vehicle, along with organizer supplied stage notes! An open service is planned after each stage to give you plenty of time to get your machine back on the course.

Held just outside of town at the Ridgecrest motorsports park, the course is a 6 mile loop that has it all: fast and flowing sections, tight and technical, smooth and sandy. All freshly graded and ready to run. The day will be a compact rally split into two coefficient one events. It will be open to all vehicles meeting NASA RallySport requirements, including RallyMoto bikes!

Are you ready for a fun, low pressure event? Are you ready to work on reading or driving with stage notes? Are you ready to practice what you learned at the rally school? Want to shake down your rally car or bike for the 2009 season? The High Desert Trails Rally in Ridgecrest California is the place! Stay tuned to our website at highdeserttrails.com for event info and registration. We can be contacted through email at: rally@highdeserttrails.com

The first official announcement.

Greetings! You’ve probably heard or read that High Desert Trails (will possibly) be on the CRS calendar for 2009! Let me take this opportunity to give you some background and get you excited to come to our event. As some of you know the original High Desert Trails Rally started in and around Ridgecrest in 1974. Last year the name was resurrected by Ray and Donna Hocker when they ran the event as a small shakedown rally on the new Area 51.5 property.

Seeing an empty slot in the beginning of the CRS Championship, we (Kristopher Marciniak and Christine Marciniak) decided to help the rally community by organizing our first event. As most of you know, we’re no strangers to rally. We have competed in over 17 rallies, participated in three national USRC Championships, volunteered for events since 1999, and are both licensed amateur radio operators (KI6IUC & KI6IUE). We have a broad range of experience from rallies in the North East to the South West, but we won’t be alone. Ray Hocker will be there as a mentor and lend a hand as the NASA Safety Steward. Donna Hocker has pledged her expertise with registration and sponsorship. It wouldn’t be a CRS rally without Mike & Paula Gibeault in their respective capacities. All of us have helped run a rally at this facility.

Let’s talk about the Area 51.5 or the Plan B property. By now you’ve heard about the solar facility that may go up right next door and prevent the partners from further development. Dusty cars and parabolic mirrors will not work together. Let’s shed some light on our rally darkness. :p The permits for the solar facility are years out. The course has been cut and a commitment to maintain the property has been made by Mark Bullock and his partners. There is no reason why we can’t keep moving forward and run a bunch of events here every year. What we’ll do as organizers is look long term into getting roads around the area to extend and if necessary move the High Desert Trails Rally onto permitted roads in and around Ridgecrest. In the meantime we’re going to spend the necessary funds on grading and re-tooling the course to make it as fun as possible!

We want the High Desert Trails to be a great beginner rally that helps driver/co-driver team building. We want it to be a fun challenge for the experienced teams. I don’t want to give too much away – as we working on the details – but we would like to give a discount to those new drivers, co-drivers and riders that take the CRS Rally School two weeks before our event. YES – I’m talking to YOU RallyMoto guys and gals! Learn your timecard and rally procedures, then run a low pressure event on a closed 6 mile course two weeks later!

The goal right now is to run a one day event that counts as two Co-efficient (1)’s. Our budget will be tight – but I think if we forgo some of the glamorous national rally flair we can offer an inexpensive rally that everyone will have a blast at! That includes food and fun for our volunteers! Look for a LOT more to come!

APRS

Click here for a FULL SCREEN map in a new window.

What are we looking at here? This is a near real-time map of all APRS stations in the rally area. APRS – Automatic Position Reporting System, is used to transmit the exact location of an object (vehicle) over amateur radio frequencies. A data packet can contain a number of additional items, such as direction, speed, altitude, temperature, etc. Short text messages can also be attached. These messages are transmitted on 144.390MHz and re-transmitted by local repeaters called digipeaters. Some of these digi’s are on the internet, and this is how you are able to see the data above!

Stations use their call-sign and a status message to identify them. You can click on the station to get more info. Be on the lookout for things like “HDT Zero Car” or “Car #761” or “Sweep”. These are vehicles on the stages right now! You might also be able to tell based on their speed. 🙂

The rally car has a ham radio, a TNC (Terminal Node Connector), and a GPS receiver. A TNC is a little data device that talks to the GPS and sends its information to a radio. Every few minutes the TNC gets the position from the GPS receiver and transmits it over the airwaves with the VHF FM radio. The TNC we use is the OpenTracker+ made by Argent Data Systems.

APRS setup for rally car tracking.

Service has a scanner and a laptop. The audio from the scanner is hooked to the laptop sound card. The software, AGW Packet Engine + AGW Tracker, receives the data and converts it to a little icon on a map. Key features: Service knows where we are at all times. There is a ham radio in the car for emergencies and the crew doesn’t have to be ham licensed. We encourage you to learn more, get your amateur radio license, and get an APRS tracker in your rally vehicle!
